New Jersey Unemployment Rises to 8.3% as Casinos Cut

April 15 (Bloomberg) -- New Jersey’s unemployment rate
climbed to 8.3 percent in March, the highest since December
1992, as hotels and restaurants cut jobs to cope with declining
consumer spending.
Employers in the state eliminated 17,200 positions last
month, with the biggest contraction, 5,900 jobs, in the leisure
and hospitality industry, the state’s labor department said in a
statement today.
“Casino hotels in Atlantic City have been especially hard
hit by the economic slowdown, leading to layoffs and other staff
reductions,” the department said in the statement.
Atlantic City’s casino revenue fell the most on record in
March, tumbling 19.4 percent from a year earlier because of the
U.S. recession and competition from neighboring states.
Gambling proceeds at the resort city, the second-biggest
U.S. casino center, dropped to $318.4 million, the New Jersey
Casino Control Commission said on April 9. Revenue from tables
at the 11 casinos declined 15 percent to $100.3 million, while
slot-machine play slid 21 percent to $218.1 million from a year
earlier.
If you heard of "Industry Studios" in New Jersey...can you tell me if it is truly worth it?

I am 11, and i was with my mom in the mall and one of thier scouts asked us to fill out a form. THey called us in the next 4 weeks saying they wanted to set up an appointment but now my mom thinks its a rip off.She doesnt want to pay anything. And if it is would you know any place to start off at near the City in New York or close near New Jersey?
Any modeling place that asks you to pay is a rip off. I'm not sure of the rules for children, as I only deal with adult models for my jewelry company, but from what I understand the agent will take a percentage of what the model is paid for a job. I'm not sure who pays for the initial portfolio, but the models I have talked to have all had their own portfolio before they ever approached any agents. They all told me if the person mentions any kind of money paid to the agent before any jobs are performed then it's probably a shyster. There's no reason that you can't get some professionally done photos, either by a true professional or simply at Sears, and start submitting to all of the big agencies. I know of Ford in NYC, but I haven't been to that area in quite a while. I know you will need a clear head shot (shoulders up sort of like a school photo), and a full body shot to give an idea of height, body proportions, etc. These should be updated at least twice a year or as often as you can. Also, all of the models I work with have mySpace accounts, so your mom might want to set one of those up for you. I am assuming that she will want to be your manager since you haven't reached your majority yet. She will have to get out there and start getting your face out there if you guys are really serious about this. My brothers in law were models as children and my mother in law said it was a hectic, demanding lifestyle. She can also look online for ads for child actors, but she will have to be really savvy to sort the good from the bad. There are a few good sites for models such as onemodelplace.com, but there are also bad ones. Also, look in the NYC newspapers for advertisements for modeling agencies and/or casting calls. Good Luck

recently moved to the area, I want to start work but I keep getting the run around in how to get this thing... does my experience count? I hate to think that someone with all my credentials can't get this license here
Could it be argued that the heavy-industry parts of New Jersey look like a real-life "LOTR" Mordor?

"LOTR"---thats's the abbreviation for "Lord of the Rings" for all of us geeky sci-fi/fantasy types. Mordor, of course, is where the baddies come from.
No. . . . Unless Mordor has a turnpike system that I'm not aware of.
