The Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry is moving to protect its members from losses caused by the failure of a firm that handled gift certificate sales for its members.
CertifiChecks Inc., which abruptly closed in February, filed for Chapter 7 Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Ohio. The company had operated in 47 states. Its gift certificates, worth up to $100, were offered as promotional items by companies and chambers of commerce to steer business to local restaurants and retailers that accepted the certificates.
In a message on its Web site last updated March 9, the Dayton, Ohio-based company warned businesses that redeemed the certificates for goods or services not to deposit them in a bank because they would be returned. The Web site suggests that anyone holding the certificates should mail them to CertifiChecks for “potential” reimbursement from funds that will be turned over to a bankruptcy trustee.

Like for instance my friend who is a roofer told me he did not make enough and was not obligated to pay taxes this year. I wonder what the limit is. I live in Ohio
My friend is a roofer and is very diligent about taxes and obeying the law. He said he did not make enough this year and did not have to pay taxes. I wonder what he is talking about? Did I make too much and do i have to pay taxes?
I'm assuming you mean you were an independent contractor instead of an employee and by not being taxed you mean no taxes were withheld from any checks you received. That is self employment income and you must file a return for income exceeding $400. You have to do a 1040, Schedule C and Schedule SE. On the Schedule C you will enter all your expenses to arrive at a net profit. That amount is subject to self employment tax (social security and medicare payments not made through payroll deductions) and income tax. SE tax is 15.3%. Unless you come up with some expenses you'll owe $1696 of self employment taxes plus income tax.

how could I get into the film industry? I live in Ohio lol?
Sep 11, 2008 by Nortay | Posted in Movies
I would really like to get into the film industry. Not necessarily acting either. Just anything with films- special effects, scores, storyboards..... But it seems like a huge risk.
any suggestions?
The film industry is a very difficult industry to get into (take it from someone who also tried to get in). While there is work all around the country, most of it is in Los Angeles. Work is extremely hard to get, because there is a very good chance that there are hundreds of people who want the same job and they have experience, talent, and connections. A lot of entry level jobs are also given out to people who can work for free (unpaid interns) with no guarantees of a paid position. If you don't have connections, the best way to go about it is to try to get work as a production assistant. It's long hours and it pays poorly, but you can work your way up. It is definitely a risk to pursue this career. Good luck.
