US Airways fights for identity in face of industry reputation ...
15.04.09
Let’s face it: US Airways has never enjoyed a sparkling reputation. While the original USAirways soldiered on during the early days of deregulation, expanding from shorthaul services to the Northeast, to the southern tier and West Coast after acquisitions of PSA and Piedmont, it never quite enjoyed it’s halcyon days. While United had the ‘90s, and Pan Am had the ‘60s, periods in which both carriers rose to global dominance, the equivalent at US Airways was usually a momentary lapse in bad press coverage. In fact, it is said by many in the industry that it was the disastrous period in the early ‘90s in which then-USAir managed to put aircraft into the ground at an alarming rate gave birth to the new name of US Airways in 1998, ostensibly to distance itself from the poor service and safety record of the USAir that had preceded it.
America West Airlines, which merged with US Airways in 2005, had not fared much better on the reputation front. Although America West had mercifully never lost an aircraft, the once high-flying deregulation darling had a rough go in the ‘90s as well. After losing buckets of money on 747 services to Hawai’i and New York, the carrier made a turn through bankruptcy, and by the turn of the millennium, had such a reputation for poor reliability that frequent fliers were calling it “America’s Worst Airline.” AWA managed to salvage their reputation quickly however, building on its strengths, including frequent fliers loyal to a generous frequent flier program, frequent, and increasingly on-time services to efficient hubs in Phoenix and Las Vegas, new aircraft and aggressive targeting of business travelers. This, in some form, is the US Airways that survives today (while the better-known US Airways name was retained, the management, base, and structure of America West prevailed, essentially making it the surviving carrier in all but name).
