Agri News staff writer

RENVILLE, Minn. -- Kelvin Thompsen is the new president and CEO of Southern Minnesota Beef Sugar Cooperative in Renville.

He's no stranger to the industry.

Thompsen was an agriculturist, district manager and director of agriculture with Holly Sugar earlier in his career.

Thompsen, who started his new post at SMBSC Jan. 1, took over when John Richmond retired in December.

He grew up in rural Wyoming. Thompsen's family didn't farm, but he had ample opportunity during the summer to help others who did. He recalls driving sugar beet truck during harvest.

Holly Sugar gave Thompsen his start in 1982. He worked at plants in Torrington and Worland, Wyo; Sidney, Mont.; and Brawley, Calif.

Each sugar beet growing region offers unique growing challenges, he said.

"All the ground is different, but sugar beet is a widely diverse crop," Thompsen said. "Sugar beets are planted from Mexico to Canada in climates that we have from Minnesota to areas where we need irrigation. It's grown in all soil types. Some have very little organic matter and others, like those in Minnesota, have very organic soils."

In Wyoming, are service dogs "in training" allowed in a business in addition to a required service dog?

I live in the state of Wyoming and manage a business in the lodging industry. We do allow one pet at our business. I know we are required to take a service dog, but are we also required to take one service dog"in training" in addition to the service dog? If you could clear this up for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Under the ADA, service dogs in training are not addressed. A trainer with a service dog in training has NO rights under the ADA. Only fully trained service dogs are addressed.

However, under Wyoming state law, service dogs and service dogs in training are considered the same thing:

"Service dog" means a dog which has been or is being specially trained to the requirements of a person with a disability...."
http://servicedogcentral.org/content/node/50#3513205

However, none of the law mentions trainers, ie whether they must be certified or even whether they have access rights (the right to train in your facility).

"Any blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearing impaired person or other person with a disability may be accompanied by a service dog in any of the places listed in subsection (a) of this section without paying an extra charge for the service dog...."

In short, this is a poorly written law. It looks a bit like only disabled people training their own service dogs have public access rights, but that would be an unusual position to take. So it's likely they either meant to include trainers in the list of people not to be discriminated against, or meant to add a paragraph about trainers rights but forgot it. Usually in the paragraph about trainers rights they also list restrictions on trainers, usually that they be from an approved program.

Consult your state's attorney general for info on whether you must permit service animals in training or not. Better yet, consult a private attorney of your own.

What is Wyoming's economy?

Well this is for my state report and I don't want to get an F. This Economy is on Wyoming and i need the agriculture and the idustry. I need 5-6 parahgraphs an introduction then some industry and agriculture. I really need your help. Make the words sound like a fifth grader so i can rewrite the stuff but it will be easier.

Wyoming Economy

Wyoming's towering mountains and vast plains provide spectacular scenery, grazing lands for sheep and cattle, and rich mineral deposits.

Mining is the state’s most important industry, and Wyoming lands are estimated to contain 1.4 trillion tons of coal, the largest coal resources in the US The world’s largest surface coal mine complex is located near Gillette. In addition, Wyoming leads the nation in the production of bentonite and trona. It is second in the nation in its uranium deposits. Wyoming also contains a wealth of gemstones including jade, moss agate, rubies, jasper, bloodstones, diamonds, and peridot.

Although mining produces a larger amount of the state’s income, the majority of the state’s residents make their living in farming or ranching. In 2000, Wyoming ranked second in the US in wool production, and third in sheep and lambs. The state also has more than 1.5 million cattle. Large grazing lands are required because the grass is sparse in Wyoming, and the average ranch in the state is larger than in any other state except Arizona. Crops grown in the state include wheat, oats, sugar beets, corn, barley and alfalfa.

Wyoming’s other natural resources make it a great tourist destination. There are 15,846 miles of fishing streams and 297,633 acres of fishing lakes supporting 31 species of game fish. Big game hunters come to the state for its elk, deer, moose, antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bear, grizzly bear and mountain lions. There are also a large number of rodeos, roundups and frontier celebrations along with numerous “dude” ranches that draw vacationers in great numbers.
