Is workers comp required of kansas small business, I have 3 employees?
Jul 31, 2008 by Maxwell460 | Posted in Small Business
Kansas exempts companies with annual payrolls less than $20,000.
Some states exempt employers in specific sectors from carrying workman's comp insurance. For example, agriculture employers and independent real estate agents are often exempt.
The downside to NOT carrying Workers comp is, of course, you expose yourself to lawsuits.

In Kansas does a small business owner have the right to know WHY you are seeing a doctor?
Apr 02, 2008 by SCUZE-ME | Posted in Law & Ethics
My boss is arguing with me that because he owns a small business that "big corporation rules" don't apply to him. In this discussion he told me it is his right to know WHAT his employees are sick with, even if just for a day, and WHY they are going to the doctor, even if just for an hour or so.
I told him he is WRONG. He may decide whether or not to pay them for the time off but it is NOT his business to know WHY.
I can't find anything on the internet to support my argument. Your input would be appreciated either way.
He does not have the right to know what you are seeing the doctor for. Theres plenty of federal "HIPA" laws (the privacy book you get from the doctor) the protect you. I would contact the labor board and ask them for guidance. He doesnt have to pay you, but hes pushing the limit otherwise.
Even the "big corporation rules" apply to him, they apply to everyone. It sounds like hes just trying to be nosey, and make sure that people are really sick and going to the doctor when they are taking medical time off, or calling in sick.

Kansas City Business Associations?
Feb 21, 2007 by bocaboca22 | Posted in Kansas City
Any good business groups or associations in KC besides the Chamber of Commerce? I'm looking for an economical way to promote my small business in Kansas City.
This website http://www.kctops.com/ is a directory of Kansas City businesses. I know you can list your restaurant, apartment, hotel, real estate business for free. Any other business has to add a link to the site to get listed on the business directory. Besides that they dont charge anything to be listed on the site.
