At Allen's flowers on 9th Street in downtown Columbia, Tina Bradley is hard at work putting together a rose bouquet.  Her co-worker assembles a large "tribute" arrangement for a funeral.  But, the real action doesn't take place in the workroom, but in the delivery van, where 98.9% of Allen's flowers end up, according to Bradley.

"Oh yeah, I sometimes drive the van."

Businesses like Allen's are beholden to fuel prices when they set their prices. But, because they do business in Missouri, Allen's customers enjoy the sixth lowest fuel cost price component in the nation, or at least they should, if the businesses pass along the savings to their customers.

One local business that has passed along savings its begun to enjoy as fuel prices have decreased since 2007's spike in oil prices is Mo/X, which recently rolled back its $2.00 fuel surcharge on trips to and from St. Louis and Kansas City's airports.

Still, the overall trend of low fuel costs benefits everyone, even if they're not buying flowers or traveling.  Brad Eiffert is the co-owner of Boone County Lumber Company, a contractor supply company that does a great deal of business with home builders in Columbia.  According to Eiffert, the cost of fuel directly translates into price differences in new homes.

My Missouri based business is small enough to be exempt from w/c. What are my risks if I don't carry w/c ins.?

If I choose to not carry workman's comp insurance will I put myself at unneeded risk? I am exempt from being required to carry coverage since I only have 4 employees.

Does any one know where to look for grants or help with a small business in the state of missouri.?

Go to http://www.grants.gov for a list of government grants and how you can apply for them. However, there are no grants for a for profit business unless you are opening a daycare and then it is a minimal amount. If you need money, you will need to apply for a loan. No lender will talk to you unless you provide them with a valid business plan. Go to http://www.sba.gov , http://www.score.org or http://www.bplan.com for sample business plans and instructions on how to write a business plan.

Then, go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to review your business plan and discuss various loan options available to you.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.
