THE EATBEAT: Grazing Platter makes Grizzly’s perfect place for kids - Grand Forks Herald

I mentioned I was on my way to Grizzly’s for lunch while visiting with Katie Watson at North Dakota Eye Clinic the other day.
“I like it. I like it a lot,” she said. She said she sometimes takes her three girls there. She orders a Grizzly Burger ($8.99) because it’s loaded with bacon, chili, cheese and grilled onions. She eats half and takes the rest home. Her daughters, 10, 5 and 2, like to share a Grizzly’s Grazing Platter ($13.99), which includes chicken quesadillas, onion rings, Grizzly wings, garlic cheese bread and mozzarella cheese sticks.
And that works well because the children enjoy grazing. And it costs less than three individual orders.
After visiting with Katie, I stopped by Grizzly’s and ordered the Grizzly Burger. I found the bun to be large and toasted to a golden brown. The half-pound burger indeed was smothered in cheese, onions, beans and bacon. I was so satisfied after eating half of it that I took a box home. Take-home boxes have become so common that people don’t bother joking about the “doggie bag” anymore.

Thinking about suing the police (long story, sorry)?
Apr 10, 2009 by bigjackmcbastard | Posted in Law & Ethics
I live in a small town and the police think they are above the law and I want to sue.
Here's some background to my situation. I am a small business owner, in Small Town, North Dakota. I (used to) smoke marijuana daily. I had a BIG problem with alcohol 3 duis, 10 minor in consumptions before I turned 21. I haven't had a drink for 1.5 years and I've been smoking pot to deal with it. I know that doesn't make me "sober", but it's been working for me and I'm very happy with where I'm at in life.
I started turning my life around after I stopped drinking and started a business servicing computers in the area. My company was growing at a rate that I never expected and people were really starting to respect me.
Skipping a lot of details.. My problem begins with a 19 year old girl who recently divorced one of my friends and she's mad at the world. She was drinking at a "party" and got charged with minor in consumption. I have reason to believe she was about to receive a meth charge and she's already in trouble with social services regarding her kids. In order to get out of the meth charge (my guess, i can't get a straight answer from anyone involved) she told police that I was selling marijuana. "How come you're hassling me when, so-and-so (me) is selling a bunch of pot."
The police took signed statements from her when she was drunk, saying she had firsthand knowledge that I was selling marijuana. Eight hours later, they had a warrant to search my apartment.
I'm going to stop here. There had been rumors that I was selling pot because a lot of people knew I was a smoker. It was just small town rumors. So didn't the police illegally obtain a warrant? They took a statement from a drunk minor who was repeating hearsay.
Also, during that party there were two other minors that were drinking but were not charged with drinking because of the families they were from. With the right lawyer can't we suggest the police were showing bias and then bring their tactics into question?
They raided my apartment and they found exactly what I said they'd find, a few pipes and my small personal bag (eighth oz or so). I was charged with Possession of Marijuana (Class B misdemeanor), Possession of Paraphernalia (Class A misdemeanor), and ingestion of a controlled substance (Class A misdemeanor). I ended up sitting in jail for 7 days because by ND state law, if you are in jail for ingestion you have to sit until you give a clean drug test. I was a heavy smoker, so after 7 days of drinking copious amounts of water I was released on a PR bond (promise to appear).
After they raided my apartment, they asked if they could search my office and car. They didn't have warrants and I didn't have anything to hide and I knew they were going to get warrants for those as well. They didn't find anything else. But my business is on Main Street and EVERYONE saw the police and drug task force and dogs going through all of my property. As a result my business has suffered horribly. I had 6 customers waiting for me to finish fixing their computers at the time, most were pretty upset by the time they got them back. Before I was getting 3-4 calls a day to fix machines. Now i'm lucky if I get 3 a week!
If I can get my charges dropped because they obtained their warrant on hearsay (from a drunk minor). I would like to sue the city police department for everything/anything I can. I was thinking Deformation of Character and damages caused due to loss of work. I also have an employee who lost work because she couldn't work when I wasn't there.
Right now I want to find a lawyer but I don't want a lawyer who is also court-appointed. I mean if i'm going to fight the state, I don't want someone who is paid by the state sometimes. So what do I search for when searching for a non-court appointed lawyer, specializing in Human Rights. These are all questions I'd like to ask that lawyer once I know who to look for.
BTW, the warrant said they were looking for "MARIJUANA AND/OR PARAPHERNALIA" so they covered themselves by making it really general. They did find that stuff, so I know I can't attack the warrant that way. That's why I need to attack how they obtained the warrant.
Sorry for all the questions, but i'm so confused and don't know where to begin. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have more questions here, I'll add more details. Or else email me at lookinforhelp@gmail.com
Thanks again.
I forgot to add that the girl who initally made the statement to the police to get their warrant feels horrible about what she did and she is willing to testify that she was repeating hearsay.
Right... I left out all of the other instances of the police doing illegal/immoral things to push their agenda. That would be a waste of everyone's time. I said that because that's my reason for wanting to sue them.
If they had a warrant for the apartment search, you have no case. A warrant means a judge thought that there was enough probable cause based on their evidence for a search. If a judge thinks the hearsay is enough, then it can be sufficient legal evidence for a search warrant to be issued (a murder report can be based on hearsay too). The hearsay rule applies to evidence allowed in the courtroom, not evidence allowed to be taken into account during investigation. Also, if the claims are true, it is by definition not defamation and as you did have these materials, there is not defamation, even if they had no reason to know that it was true at the time. While I'm no fan of marijuana laws or coercions of information, you have no case, don't waste your money trying to sue them. There is also nothing in here about the police thinking they are above the law (except the possibility of threats to the girl, which you don't really have evidence of). That is how the law works, get information, get a warrant, do a search, indite. They did everything they were supposed to. While it can be polite for police to agree to be discreet about a search, they have no real legal or deep ethical necessity to do so.

Best way to collect a judgement in another state?
Aug 03, 2006 by salute222000 | Posted in Personal Finance
I borrowed about $10,000 to someone I kind of knew to start up a business and after about six months the business was closed and my monthly payments stopped coming also. After not being able to track him down I went to small claims court and received a judgement for the maximum amount allowed in South Dakota but wasn't able to track him down for about six months, until someone tipped me off that he had moved to North Dakota which causes other complications. Anyone have any advice - suggestions?
I don"t know the process to do this for N. Dakota, but what you need to do is domesticate the judgement in N. Dakota.
