I'm taking a couple of days off, but I can't help thinking about the news that Oregon's unemployment rate has now climbed to 12.1 percent - equaling the worst of the state's last deep recession, in the early 1980s.

That recession, which had very different causes, is seared on the memory of just about everyone who lived through it. And, afterward, Oregon was never the same again.

It sure seems clear that the same is true for the economic downspin we're now in. I think that five or 10 years from now we're going to be a very different state. I won't even try to predict how. If I could I'd be making the killer investment that would restore my 401k to new heights.

But think a bit how the deep recession of a quarter-century ago changed the state.

Before raging inflation - and the official attempts to quell it - sent housing into a tailspin, Oregon was a state with a remarkably broad middle class. Family-wage jobs were plentiful in rural Oregon thanks to the timber industry. In 1978, the average worker earned as much in Crook County as in Washington County, amazing as that now seems.
