Several protests are scheduled today as part of the nationwide "Tea Party," a rally for disgruntled taxpayers to voice their opposition to the rate of taxation and spending.

The event was inspired by the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Robert Behre wrote about the Tea Party at the U.S. Customhouse in Charleston at 5:30 p.m. today.

Gov. Mark Sanford has a lot to say about Tax Day. Here's his statement: "Today it's worth noting the fact that we are at a truly frightening tipping point with regard to federal spending, and the consequences it will have for every current -and especially future - taxpayer here in South Carolina," Sanford said. "This year, government spending will account for more than a quarter of the entire economy, a level not seen since our country was fighting for its survival against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

Any rankings of University of South Carolina Upstate or Coastal Carolina University Business Schools?

I'm torn between these two schools. I've been accepted to both. I only have about year and a half left at either school to graduate with a business degree. I just want to know which one is ranked better, although I doubt either of them are actually large enough to be included in any serious rankings. Are there any companies that do rankings on smaller business colleges?

US News ranks both. They aren't in the same ranking group but reality is that they are both very similar. Until not that long ago, Coastal Carolina was also a campus of USC.

USC-Upstate #35 (tier 1) Bachelor's colleges - south
Coastal Carolina tier 4 Liberal Arts colleges

Both are AACSB accredited. Both are SACS accredited. CCU also has an MBA, USC-U (UpU) is undergrad only.

Based on web hit (not a reliable measure of a school but interesting), CCU is 17 and UpU is 19. Both are NCAA Division I

CCU is nearly double the size of USC-Upstate; One thing that caught my eye is that USC-Upstate claims an enrollment of nearly 5000 but has an alumni base of 15,500 -- something is wrong with one of those numbers or people don't graduate at USC-U.

When looking at the "notable alumni" of CCU on the Wikipedia page it's interesting that they are all athletes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coastal_Carolina_University That doesn't bode well for business or academics.

I'd hazard that in a side-by-side ranking of the two that Coastal Carolina would come out slightly ahead of USC-Upstate. Neither is USC, Clemson, or College of Charleston though. Outside of their own local market area, you'd likely hear from people "you went where? Where's that?" -- that's not a bad thing in itself but if you're truly interested in ranked universities, neither of these is it.

I know both communities very well. Myrtle Beach is a much more fun place to live. ☺

Im thinking about starting an event planning business in a trendy South Carolina town. Is it a good idea?

I love the idea of having a small independent event planning business. I recently moved to a small up and coming town in South Carolina and think a more "exotic" event planning business would be a great idea. Exotic meaning, crazy themed parties, more out there ideas etc. Can a profit be made in event planning? What are the risks involved?
I have not done my business plan yet because right now this is just a thought. I want to know if I should take my thought further

Volunteer first for a non-profit planning a charity event, golf outing, swanky dinner, etc, and you'll see all the behind the scenes work that goes into it. If you're only experience is planning a wedding, its a whole different world than say an event to have to sell tickets to and deal with people judging the "value" of the event. Plus by working with a non-profit, you'll make good contacts with both the donors, board, and vendors, and create good karma from your volunteering.

Is a self employed business license in york county south carolina required?

I want to start a self employed business of pressure washing homes, convenient stores, driveways, sidewalks, small business fronts, decks, privacy fences and patio furniture as well as patios. Also, I want to offer staining and sealing services for the decks and fences. How many licenses do or am I required to have and or purchase in addition to the South Carolina specialty license registration? Do I need a license in every small city or town in YORK County or just the license in York County itself?

It appears York County doe not distribute such licensure

"This Office Does Not

* Issue contractor licenses or give examinations."

So, any licensure would be applied for per individual community standards.
