CHARLESTON -- Democrats say the state's jobless benefit fund would have gone broke without the tax. Republicans call it a 70 million dollar tax on the state's business community. Charleston businessman Johnny Porterfield says he's not surprised by the expected tax increase.

"We're taxed to death. Small business has so many taxes on it. I don't see how people can survive," says Porterfield.

He would like to expand his business with new equipment and new employees, but increasing taxes are decreasing the chances of that happening.

"If business would stay the same and taxes would level off, we could put another person or two people to work no problem at all," says Porterfield.

Republican lawmakers had offered an amendment to take that money from the state's rainy day fund instead of the tax increase, but that was shot

I need help finding legal information for starting a small business in West Virginia.?

I have been trying to find out what all is required to start an online pet treat business in WV. Do I have to have a business license if I am using something like paypal on my site?? I have also read that some states require you to have a commercial kitchen and I have no clue where to find all of this info so if you can help me that would be great! Thanks~

First, check out why West Virginia scored 49th in the list of business friendly States on Forbes.com. Only Louisiana in the wake of Katrina scored lower. West Virginia is a racketeer State. The minute you file for your business license, every State agency will have it's hand out looking for a cut of the action before you get started. You'll be heavily regulated, routinely audited by the State tax Dept. and offered absolutely nothing in return for the high taxes you will pay. You will be limited in getting business insurance because most major companies have pulled out of the State. So you're gonna pay a boat load. Even though the workers comp has been privatised, you will still pay a much higher rate than you would on a comparable employee in...say... Virginia which, ironically is Forbes best State to do business in. West Virginia is a nice place to visit, an o.k. place to live, but about the last place on Earth I'd ever own another business. We relocated our business from Hampshire County WV to Frederick County, VA two years ago and never looked back. I always discourage people from starting a business in WV. But forewarned is forearmed...good luck.

Starting a Medical Supply Business?

I live in a small town in central West Virginia and am considering starting a medical supply business. I'm really at a loss as to where to begin the process.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I should start----do I need a license to do this? Should I specialize or stock lots of things? Can I run this business from home?

I have an EMT and medical examiner background so I do know a little bit about the medical business.

Any help our guidance that anyone could lend me would be much appreciated.

What is the medical supply business like already in your town? Are there already a lot of suppliers? Have some gone out of business lately? Visit them casually to see if they seem busy or have nothing to do. Chat with someone who works there to see how they feel about the future of the supply industry. Check with the City Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau to see what the business environment is. Check with City Hall permit department to see what is required. Talk to your doctor (make a business appointment) to see if he is satisfied with his suppliers or what would he like to see changed in the industry. What kind of businesses are already located less than a block from the local hospitals? Walk in to see what's going on and talk to whoever will listen.
