EL PASO -- If you want to succeed in business, it helps if you love what you do, said Susan Eisen, chief executive officer and chief designer for Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry & Watches in West El Paso.

"I work 60 to 80 hours a week, but it doesn't seem like work," said Eisen, one of eight El Paso business owners or small-business advocates who will be honored during the U.S. Small Business Administration's annual Small Business Week celebration in May.

Eisen, an El Paso native, was announced Tuesday as the SBA's El Paso District Small Business Person of the Year.

"I can honestly say I love every minute of it," Eisen said. "There has never been a day when I get up and don't want to go to work."

Having that passion is the biggest reason for her success, she said.

She also said her father, former Marine Jack Eisenberg, instilled many life lessons that influenced the way she does business.

"We went out to dinner one night and I asked him about all the things he learned as

Will Texas Small Business Owners Survive?

If Hillary gets her immigration plan passed will the business owners (both small and large) in Texas (and the rest of the United States) survive. She proposes large fines against the employers while giving amnesty to the illegals. Why would she prosecute the U.S. citizen to a far greater extent than the illegal alien? The illegal alien pays a small fine, gets amnesty and under her health plan, will also get free health care! This is what 30% of America wants to represent our country? She has been a part of the worst government in U S History and she wants us to put her in office to completely destroy our economy and quality of life!

The illegal alien is a criminal the moment they enter the United States illegally and they compound the crime every day they remain here. The employer who knowingly employees an illegal is also a criminal. They both should be treated as such. To treat the U.S. citizen worse than the illegal alien who in all reality is getting a pretty good deal out of it, is terrible. With that kind of reasoning it is no wonder we have such a large number of illegals slipping into our country. The illegal should be treated as a criminal not slapped on the hand and rewarded while the small business looses out!

We have a small business in Texas and only a couple of employees. How do I do payroll manually for right now to save up some money? How do I know what I need to deduct and how much?

If you use QuickBooks you can buy any of a number of different types of payroll Subscriptions. I Believe the other accounting software have payroll also. The cost is usually relatively inexpensive. You do have to withhold taxes or have te people as vendors 1099. CAUTION THERE ARE SPECIFIC RULES WITH THE IRS ON THIS. Base deductions are:
Federal Withholding
Employee Social Security
Employer Social Security (matches the employee)
Employee Medicare
Employer Medicare (matches the employee)
FUTA (federal unemployment)
SUTA (State Unemployment)
Workmens Comp.
Any other benefits that you designate or are required in your location.
You may also have to pay/withhold City taxes or other local taxes.
Speak with an accountant in your area to determine. then call the state for their information.

Texas Small Business Contract Employment Laws?

I am a small business owner in Texas (one-man operation). I would like to hire some people as contractors to make cold calls for me. The salary would be commission only. What laws or guidelines do I need to know about? Because they'd be contractors, I don't have to worry about paying insurance or unemployment or anything else do I? And I would only pay taxes on their commission, right? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Wow you have an interesting question! Have you thought of asking a lawyer? Probably worried about the cost? What if I can get you unlimited contact with a lawyer for personal and your business questions for less than a 3 dollars a day? I can help you and your business.
