Moody’s lowered Fifth Third’s issuer rating to “Baa1” from “A2,” Moody’s third-lowest investment grade. Moody’s also lowered the long-term debt and deposit ratings for the bank’s Ohio and Michigan units to “A2” from “A1.”

“Fifth Third operates in challenging Midwest markets, including Ohio and Michigan, and it also expanded its exposure to the troubled Florida market in recent years,” Moody’s says. The agency also noted “poor underwriting and questionable expansion initiatives earlier this decade,” as problems that affect the bank’s near-term outlook.

On the positive side, the bank’s recent agreement to sell a majority stake in its profitable Fifth Third Processing Solutions will help its capital position, Moody’s said.

Fifth Third (Nasdaq:FITB) completed its $1.1 billion purchase of First Charter in June. With the deal, Fifth Third added $4.8 billion in assets, and picked up 59 branches, 57 branches in North Carolina and two in suburban Atlanta.
