Employment in New Jersey dropped in March for the 14th straight month as employers cut 17,200 jobs, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported today.
The loss boosted the state's jobless rate to 8.3 percent of the workforce from 8.2 percent in February. In March last year, New Jersey's unemployment rate was 4.8 percent.
Eight of the 10 job categories the department uses showed declines last month, with the largest losses in the leisure/hospitality sector (down 5,900 jobs), professional/business services (down 4,600), manufacturing (down 3,700) and trade/transportation/utilities (down 1,800).
The cutback in leisure/hospitality jobs came largely from restaurants and hotels, which felt the effect of reduced consumer spending during the nationwide recession that began in December 2007.
"Casino hotels in Atlantic City have been especially hard-hit by the economic slowdown, leading to layoffs and other staff reductions," the department said.

New Jersey Community Gardens and Farm Shares
Â
BestofNJ.com is getting a head start on summer and all the bounty that comes from the earth that gives us our well deserved name: The Garden State. We’ll begin with just one farm, but we’ll add more as we go along and we encourage you to tell us about the community farms or farm shares that you know of in your area. And if you are wondering about pick your own farms in Jersey, we’ll be doing a feature on them this month too.
================
The Community Supported Garden at Genesis Farm:
I stumbled across the Genesis site the other day when I was investigating some slow food businesses in New Jersey and it reminded that the NY Times did a article on community gardens or farm shares last year. I fell in love with this place as soon as I saw it.
There’s allot that I like about Genesis. Their website is very last century and homey but that’s somehow appropriate for a farm. (If they want to make it update it, they can write me!) Anyway, my favorite page is the Apprentice Page. The vegetables look wonderful, the members have these warm, open faces and the landscape is beautiful there.
From their share page they explain how their share program works:
“How Much Food in a Share? The CSA concept enables us to grow the food in the most responsible way, honoring the earth and ourselves. There are about 250 households who are shareholders. An average share is about 19 pounds of vegetables per pick-up, though it varies with the seasons. This is enough for a family of 4 who wants to eat seasonal and regional food, who emphasizes a vegetable-based diet, and who enjoys preparing fresh foods.”
I am thinking of buying a house in new jersey. Is it a good time? Have the markets bottomed out?

I am thinking of buying a house in new jersey. Is it a good time? Have the markets bottomed out? Will I get better price and interest rates if I wait for some more months?
The markets won't bottom out until 2009. Maybe in 2010. Unemployment will drive Foreclosures up in 2009 to new record levels.
But at local levels, the picture can be very different.
Depending mainly on unemployment levels, some markets will completely collapse, some will loose only 10 - 20 %.
However, mortgage rates will go next year sky high, because of inflation, adding to the misery.
If you know, you are going to stay in an area ofr 10 years or more, buy carefully in the next couple of month, if not, rent.
And do never, ever listen to realtors or other "experts".
Nobody, but nobody knows the future.

don't know myself, but I'm interested in the answers. If you're ever in Florida, the Amish are here in the winter and serve wonderful cinnamon buns, dairy and other fruit baked goods. Wonderfully delicious!

What are the best Flea Markets in New Jersey?

to buy or sell??
Englishtown and Collingswood are my favorites. I have sold at both.
I have also sold at U Sell, in Vineland, but really do not care for it. The same for Berlin.
I have heard that both Columbus and Cow Town are good to, but I have never been to them.
The one the above answerer is referring to is Englishtown, one of my Favorites.
