Last month Discover tripled its bad-loan set-aside in the fiscal first quarter, as tough economic times spurred a surge in delinquent payments among its increasingly hard-pressed customers. The company stayed in the black with the help of a legal settlement.
Discover also recently announced a dividend cut. Its stock closed Monday at $8.45 a share. Its 52-week trading range is $4.73 to $19.87.
The layoffs, which are to occur by mid-May, will touch all departments at Discover, but few will involve employees who deal with customers, a spokesman said.
Steelmaker ArcelorMittal SA will indefinitely idle steel-bar operations in East Chicago, resulting in the layoffs of about 400 union and non-union employees, said Jim Robinson, a district manager for the United Steel Workers.

No real specifics regarding supply and demand for you but the real estate market there is not doing well. Cost of living is low but the title company I work for just closed their Indianapolis location because the market is so bad.
