Maryland's Tax Credits For Biotech Firms Survive - Washington Post
16.04.09
The popular program encourages investment in Maryland biotechnology start-ups by letting investors receive a tax credit for 50 percent of the money they put into eligible companies. The program has provided $6 million a year since 2006 for the tax credits. It also has become a model for other states, including Virginia, that are trying to foster entrepreneurial investment.
But the fund was in danger of being reduced this year as the state grappled with a tightened budget. The House had voted to cut the fund to $4 million, but a compromise by a House-Senate conference committee was reached. The full Senate voted Monday, the final day of the legislature's session, to fully fund the tax credits.
"For some of the companies who have benefited from this, it has been the difference in their very survival," said Richard Zakour, executive director of MdBio, which represents Maryland biotech firms. He said 38 firms have taken advantage of the investment tax credits so far, raising close to $30 million.

Any ways? maybe shares in security companies? Shorting the gun manufacturer's. I know some might think this is bad but when life gives you lemons............
Not directly related, but devoted to " security" are ACTI and ID...they control " who goes where" programs and fingerprint and facial identifications, etc. And it's not " ghoulish" or anything like that to be thinking of investing in security because of a tragedy or disaster...think of it almost like " socially concious" investing...people HAVE to give more thought to security ( obviously) and investing in companies that do so is promoting everyone's safety.

What are the Virginia laws in regards to foreclosures? Can the lender come after your other assets?
Oct 15, 2008 by ajamz | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
I have an investment property that I can no longer make payments on and wanted to see if the lender can come after my salary, 401k, etc. in Virginia if I walk away from the house.
If the lender forecloses and sells the property for less than you owe (including all the foreclosure fees, interest, per diems, selling costs, etc.), it can sue you for the balance. If the lender then gets a judgment against you, your pay is subject to garnishment, your real estate can be liened and your bank accounts can be seized. Your 401k is probably exempt.
Also, be aware that judgments are valid for a very long time - 20 years in some states. They also accrue interest until paid - at much better than market rates.
