New Jersey's pension funds, which are supposed to pay retirement benefits to teachers, firefighters and government workers, faced a $34.4 billion long-term deficit as of June 30, up $6 billion from the previous year, the Treasury Department said yesterday.
The gap between what the pension funds have and what they are expected to pay in retirement benefits has surely grown significantly larger since then, analysts said. Since June 30, the state's pension investments have lost an estimated one-quarter of their value; lawmakers approved a plan to let towns skip half of their payments into the funds this year, and Gov. Corzine proposed a budget that would contribute only a fraction of what the state owes in the coming fiscal year - 6 percent in the case of the two largest retirement funds.
The seven retirement plans had about 73 percent of the money needed for their long-term costs as of June 30, according to the Treasury Department, so benefits for the 600,000
Is it a good investment to buy a house in New Jersey for savings purposes?
Jun 28, 2006 by BeWhoUR | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
Thinking of taking a loan to finance a house purchase in New Jersey. Would like to find out if it is a good decision compared to other savings options.
Probably. It depends how you look at it.
Over the long term, stocks & real estate will probably give you the same return on the dollar (learned this in Finance at University of Chicago nobel prize winner). However, that may vary in the short run/shorter time horizons (e.g. over 10 yrs or less). Recognize you usually own a home for longer & usu get a 30 yr loan. Lately, obviously real estate has been doing better than the stock market. But, with interest rate hikes, the real estate market seems to be cooling off. And, real estate can differ greatly pending on the house you buy & its location. I do not claim to be an expert and you may want to speak w/ an objective real estate agent (if you can find one).
That being said, in general buying is almost always preferable to renting as your monthly payments will be lower, esp as time goes on. This, in turn, will allow you to save more so you can invest it whereever you want to. Usually rent increases year after year; but, your mortgage payments will be the same as they are today for 30 yrs. I say this as someone who has rented the last 10 yrs & wish I had bought sooner. My apartment just went condo & I bought it 2 months ago. In retrospect, I wish I had done it sooner.
I read an excellent book on the subject that was very educational for first time buyers. It's called "The automatic Millionaire Homeowner" by David Bach. It explains all the basics & how to think abt mortgage options and what might be right for you. It was really helpful. A few months ago, I was a complete moron on the subject...now, I understand what others are talking about.

Is it possible to get an authentic Mets Jersey with the 2008 Shea Patch?
Sep 18, 2008 by Tim B | Posted in Baseball
Also, I cannot decide if I like Pelf enough for the jersey investment. Its either Pelf or Wright. Any comments on this?
I have three Wright authentics and even met him once and got him to sign one of them. I'm pretty sure Wright will be a Met for a lot longer thatn Pelfrey will.
I bought the jerseys before the official patch was put on them. I found them on Ebay
I had somebody sew it on and it looks perfect!! I'm pretty sure the authentic with the patch is selling too, but this saved me a few bucks since they are marking them up because Shea is going away.
