UBS Client Pleads Guilty to Filing False Tax Return

By David Voreacos and Justin Blum

April 14 (Bloomberg) -- A Florida yacht broker pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return that failed to disclose $3.4 million held at UBS AG , Switzerland’s largest bank and the subject of a U.S. crackdown on offshore tax evasion.

Robert Moran, 57, admitted today in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that he filed a 2007 tax return that didn’t report his UBS account, according to court records. Moran was the beneficial owner of the account, which was set up in the name of Winter Drive Investments SA, a Panamanian corporation.

UBS avoided U.S. prosecution on Feb. 18 by agreeing to pay $780 million in penalties, admitting it helped taxpayers hide money in Swiss accounts and strengthening its compliance programs. The Zurich-based bank also gave more than 250 client names to the IRS. U.S. authorities are encouraging UBS clients to come forward to avoid prosecution.

“We will continue to prosecute those who use offshore schemes to avoid paying their taxes,” said R. Alexander Acosta , U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, in a statement. “If you are hiding income abroad, I suggest you approach us.”

Are there job opportunities in investment banking in Florida?

After I finish my master's degree in Finance I would like to go into investment banking. People tell me start in New York and I probably will. But after a couple years is it possible to make a good living as an investment banker in Florida? I grew up there and would like to return.

costs with a florida investment property?

I hope to purchase an investment propety in Orlando. I live in the UK.

I will need to find a company to manage my property and do maintenance. What companies are available, and what are the fees like?

Also, how much money a week can you expect to make with a 3 bedroom property?

I am a Real Estate Agent in Cape Coral, Florida - about 2 hours south of Orlando.

If you are thinking about buying a home to rent out to vacation guests there are more fees you need to consider beside the management fees.

1) property taxes
2) insurance
3) power and water
4) basic phone
5) basic cable
6) mortgage
7) lawncare and pool care
8) mortgage
9) reserves for repairs
10) pest control

The property mangement company either will ask a flat fee/month or a percentage out of your rent income

Down here in Cape Coral 3/2 vacation homes on a Gulf Access Canal with a pool are starting with 800,-/week and are going up from there depending on area and condition of the house.

What do you think I should do? and Is Florida real estate a good investment?

I always want to work towards something. For example right now all my money that I get from work is going towards an apartment that I would like to move into this summer. But my plans have kind of changed now because the apartment that I have been looking at is for people who work in a certain type of job that I do not work in. So if I don't pull some strings I doubt that I will get the apartment thats I am looking at.

So now I am thinking of saving my money and working towards investing my money and buying some real estate. Preferably a place In Florida.

I really would like a big change in my life and I think relocating would be good for me right now. I am also looking into being a international student for a college there as well.

So my questions are, do you think it would be a good idea to do this? and to buy a place in Florida, do you think it is a good investment?
I have a job that allows me to pack and move anywhere still doing my job I do now.

I would love to buy In the UK but it is way too expensive.

Buy a house if you want to live in a house. Don't buy a house as an investment.

1. Houses are overpriced right now.
2. Houses require a lot of maintenance.
3. A house will lock all of your money. Its not diversified. If a hurricane destroys your house, you're screwed.
4. A house becomes a liability. It becomes hard for you to pick up and move somewhere else. It locks you down.

I'd suggest investing in stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and gold. Later on a house when you're about to get settled.
