Pickens jail administrator receives top state award - Anderson Independent Mail

— The South Carolina Jail Administrator’s Association has named Capt. Phil Sargent of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office as the 2009 South Carolina Jail Administrator of the Year.

The award is given annually to a South Carolina jail administrator who demonstrates outstanding leadership and innovation, according to the association’s news release.

During the presentation ceremony, Capt. Sargent stated that the award should not be viewed as an individual award, but as a collective award for all of the employees of the Pickens County Detention Center.

These employees are very dedicated and motivated to ensure the Detention Center runs as safely and securely as possible, Sargent said.

Although the Pickens County Detention Center is not one of the larger county facilities in the state, its reputation for initiating inmate programs is known statewide.

Some of these programs include the GED and computer training programs for female inmates.
