Look to the water.

That’s the conclusion members of the Borderlands Village Innovation Pilot program reached after month of soliciting comments from residents regarding the balance of open space and economic development in town.

“After surveying and talking to residents, we found water access to be something people were concerned about,” said Donna Bronwell, a member of the pilot team. “And the main problem seemed to be promoting the waterways in town.”

The Borderlands program, a collaboration between Connecticut’s Nature Conservancy and the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council, is focusing on current and future economic growth in the region with an emphasis on promoting rural preservation.

In 2007, Killingly and Exeter, R.I. were chosen as test sites for the larger Borderlands Project region, which encompasses 20 towns hugging the Connecticut-Rhode Island border.
