Hurricane Katrina victim won't return to Big Easy - Times Daily

Crinel was not at home Aug. 28, 2005, when the storm smashed through the city.

It left an estimated 1,800 dead and $81 billion in damages, according to U.S. government figures.

Crinel was at a church retreat in Baldwin County, Ala., 150 miles away from her flood-damaged home. Her daughter, Lisa Crinel, who lived about eight blocks from her mother, was one of thousands who fled the city that day.

Now, Lena lives in Muscle Shoals, 400 miles from the city she loves. Her daughter moved to LaPlace, a suburb about 35 miles west of New Orleans.

"I'm liking it here - away from the hustle and bustle," said Lena, who still has Louisiana tags on her car.

For mother and daughter, like many former residents, the effects of Katrina are still being felt years after and have led to a series of decisions where some stayed close, while others left for good.

According to the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, most of Crinel's neighbors returned to the small cul-de-sac by September 2008.
