Applicants must be a resident of Hawaii and a student graduating in 2009 from a Hawaii public or private high school, or home-based high school program. Proof of eligibility must be provided after the award announcement.

The essay must discuss how biotechnological innovations benefit and will have future benefit to Hawaii. Essays should be at least 600 words, but no longer than 2,500 words excluding references. Submission deadline is April 17.

Judges will evaluate submissions on clarity, thoughtful attention to all aspects of the essay, eloquence and originality. Citation of sources is important. Each essay will be read and evaluated by the HCIA Review Panel. The Panel's recommendations will be submitted to the HCIA Board of Directors, who will make the final award determinations. The HCIA website provides a starting point and references to key websites. Local librarians, friends and neighbors employed at Hawaii's seed research and production facilities are also good resources for information.

Thank you for attending my sessions at the 2009 Hawaii Educator Technology Conference!!!!    Several asked me about the file converter for Office 2007.  This converter is called the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.   By installing the Compatibility Pack along side of Microsoft Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, save, and create files using the Open XML Formats new to the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Office 2000 users, as well as users of Windows 2000 SP4 and later, can convert Open XML Formats to binary file formats from within Windows Explorer.   You can download it for free here.   More information about the Compatability Pack here.
