Fatality rate on Ariz. roads at record low - Arizona Republic

In 2007, the latest year for which figures are available, 1,066 people died in vehicle crashes on all roads in the state, which equates to 1.69 fatalities for every million miles of travel, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The rate was 18 percent lower than a year earlier, compared with a 4 percent drop nationwide.

The picture is not all positive, however. Arizona continues to outdistance the national average, ranking 10th among states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Since at least 1975, the earliest year for which state-by-state figures are available, Arizona's fatality rate has hovered well above the national average. The gap has narrowed in recent years.

Alberto Gutier, who returned Wednesday as director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, a post he held from 1995 to 2003, credits Arizona's tough stance on drunken driving for lowering the fatality rate.

"We have some of the best drunk-driving laws in the country. It's got to be a factor," he said. "I'm bringing back an old slogan of mine from the '90s: 'Drive hammered, get nailed.' "
