Substandard bridges span Anderson County - Anderson Independent Mail

— AAA Carolinas officials have reported that there are 110 substandard bridges in Anderson County, and that ranks fourth most among the counties in South Carolina.

Only Greenville, Spartanburg and Charleston counties have more bridges in bad shape than Anderson County, according to the AAA Carolinas, an automotive club.

Brendan Byrnes, a spokesperson for AAA Carolinas, said his organization ranked the bridges by taking into account their sufficiency rating and average weekly traffic. None of the Anderson County bridges were among the top 20 substandard bridges in the state, he said.

Byrnes said that, aside from federal stimulus money, the funding for fixing the bridges comes mostly from the 16-cent per gallon state gas tax, which is among the lowest in the nation. The tax has not gone up since 1987, he said.
