Toomey Makes It Official: Challenging Specter in 2010 - Wall Street Journal Blogs

Toomey has been publicly mulling a re-match with Specter–who dispatched him 51%-49% in the hotly contested 2004 primary—after Specter voted in favor of President Barack Obama ’s $787 billion economic stimulus package.

On Monday, Toomey stepped down as president of the anti-tax Club for Growth, which opposed the stimulus package, in a move that was viewed as a precursor to today’s formal announcement.

Specter, the state’s longest serving senator and a prominent moderate, faces an uphill primary battle because the state’s GOP voter pool is considerably more conservative following the 2008 election when more than a quarter million Republicans and independents switched parties to vote in the Democratic presidential primary.

(For more on the race, read this story in The Wall Street Journal.) Two additional conservative candidates, Peg Luksik and Larry Murphy , are also challenging Specter in the primary.

Should foreign countries own our toll roads?

Toll roads in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Indiana are owned by foreign companies. A deal is being completed right now with an Australian company to manage a series of toll roads in Virginia.

While these toll roads are managed by foreign companies, the American tax payer will still foot the bill for building them. The foreign companies will collect any profits from the tolls.

In a country where American jobs are getting scarcer, it seems that these deals will make the situation even worse. In Virginia, Australia will manage 70 miles of "high occupancy" toll roads along the Capitol Beltway.

Many Americans do not realize that much of our infrastructure is being turned over to foreign management, including our ports, airlines, and roads. Should there be more publicity connected to these deals? Should foreign countries be allowed to buy into our public infrastructure or should laws be passed to prevent these arrangements that take the profits from our own people?

This is just another avenue. The public should absolutely know about them and possible consequences and any benefits. It would seem any benefit would be short-term in nature. It is maddening. We have utility companies owned by foreign companies. (National Grid - England) We have the Chinese buying up our bonds. We are indebted to the Chinese. Why more people aren't bothered by this is beyond my comprehension. It is frustrating.

Why does it seem like America is run by little children?

I swear, how stupid are people here?

I'm watching this piece on TV about the high murder rate in Philadelphia, and Anderson Cooper is essentially blaming it on the high number of guns in the city and gun laws in Pennsylvania.

GIVE ME A BREAK! How about blaming the drug dealers and thugs in the city? That's why the guns are there! How about blaming the economy and poverty there!

I just love that people here are still trying to figure out why schools are so bad. Hmmm, maybe it's because schools hire the crappiest, dumbest teachers and the laws have basically encouraged kids not to respect or listen to teachers in class? Maybe it's the idiot parents who think school is just for babysitting?

I love how people here encourage the war in Iraq, the idolatry of the military, police, firefighters and sports stars over health care, a stable economy and a proper infrastructure!

Are monkeys in control of America?

1. Americans aren't smart enough to understand the real issues and real solutions require more brains, skill and diplomacy than your average politician possesses.

2. America's policies are driven by the special interest groups who own the politicians.

3. News program ratings would drop if they presented their viewers with a real analysis of the problems and solutions. Chronic consumers of mass media just don't have the attention span for that type of thing.

Is it only a Culture of Corruption if it’s the other guy’s amoral act?

Republican Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona, questioned Democratic Rep. Peter J. Visclosky of Indiana on the House floor Tuesday about whether the Center for Instrumented Critical Infrastructure actually exists – since they were about to be appropriated over a million tax dollars. Rep. Flake asked Rep.Visclosky, "Does the center currently exist?"
Visclosky, who chairs the spending subcommittee responsible for the project said, "At this time, I do not know," but the Indiana Democrat assured, "But if it does not exist, the monies could not go to it." {Now THAT IS re-assuring!}
And who could possibly be the sponsor of such an earmark for a corporate entity that at that time had yet to be created…Pennsylvania Democrat John P. Murtha.
A certificate filed with the requested funds says the money is actually earmarked to Concurrent Technologies Corporation, a brief search of campaign finance records shows CTC President and CEO Daniel R. DeVos, has contributed $7,000 to Murtha's reelection campaign. J.P must be slipping! That’s less than a 10% kick back! He demanded more than that during ABSCAM.
With Thanks to everyone I chose your answer as you attempted to address the definitional difference in amoral and immoral. Upon reflection I could have phrased the question more succinctly, however…When Reid, Pelosi, and of course Murtha condemn others for behavior such as their own, they are…

Oh America! It's not amoral. It's unethical and immoral.
And I agree with the others 100%.

Thanks so much for bringing this to light. We've got to keep as much light on all this as possible.

Corruption breeds in the dark.
