Such is the center of Tanya Barfield's 2004 play "Blue Door," which African Continuum Theatre Company will present tomorrow through May 3 at Atlas Performing Arts Center. Barfield sets the play's "present tense" in 1995, at the time of the Million Man March (Lewis's wife has left him because he refused to take part in that event).

In 2004, Barfield says, "1995 didn't feel that far away in terms of the one-dimensional stereotypical images of African Americans in the media. . . . If you had told me when I was writing the play that four years later we'd have elected a black president, I probably would have fallen out of my chair."

Now, Barfield sees her play "in the kaleidoscope of history."

"It was just a short time ago when if you were black and were doing well in school, you were said to be acting white. . . ." she says. "Within certain communities, there was great shame over the legacy of black people in history." But that view, Barfield notes, "doesn't have the same potency that it had before."

Bush Pledges Federal Support for Minneapolis Bridge Recovery

MINNEAPOLIS —
President Bush said Tuesday the federal government will use its power to accelerate Minnesota's recovery from a bridge disaster and flash flooding.

Bush's comments here, after a briefing from federal and state authorities, were meant as a boost of confidence for a state that has dealt with twin crises this summer.

The Interstate 35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River nearly three weeks ago, killing at least 13 people and shutting down a major transportation artery. And over the weekend, heavy Midwest storms and flooding killed at least 21, seven of them in Minnesota.

Bush confronted both topics before heading nearby for a Republican fundraiser.

"Our job now is to cut through the bureaucracy, as best as possible, and get the people down here a new bridge," Bush said from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Air Reserve Station.

Bush commended those who have led recovery efforts, including military divers who have searched for bodies. He personally met with about 20 of the divers to thank them.

"The spirit that caused the recovery to be well coordinated is the very same spirit that's going to cause this bridge to get rebuilt," Bush promised.

With the search for bodies over at the site of the interstate bridge collapse, authorities will focus on removing tons of wreckage from the Mississippi River so a replacement bridge can be built over the next year.

Bush on Tuesday declared an emergency exists in the state, freeing up the city and state for more federal aid in their recovery efforts.

On the flooding, Bush said the government would move quickly to process requests for help from Minnesota, so that residents could count on a "flood of help" to come down.

He later attended a fundraiser for Sen. Norm Coleman, a Republican whose seat is considered vulnerable in 2008. The event raised $1.2 million for Coleman and the Minnesota Republican Party.

No kidding! The states and cities need to take a better look at how they are running things. Bush is not to blame for the poor choices, management, and spending habits of other elected officials.(No matter if they are Democrat or Republican)

How does putting almost a trillion dollars on infrastructure create jobs?

For those of us in the the medical, social services, education, legal, hospitality and other fields, how does this create jobs? Creating millions of construction jobs only guarantee work for illegals. The word about construction jobs will go through Latin America like a TSUNAMI. Again, here we go! 350 billions were spent and the average citizen did not benefit. Another 350 billion is about to be given and much of the same will happen.

I know some would say we need better road, bridges, and highways in-order for folk to get to work. That is very true, but better roads have no direct correlations with CREATING millions of outside of those who labor as construction workers.

Illegals have always and will always be in the forefront of construction work. Whites and blacks cannot get jobs anymore. Even our States hire them. I once saw nothing but hispanic construction workers in Southern Louisana from Port Charles to the Louisiana-Mississippi line.

This is NOT about creating jobs! The only way to create jobs is to creat jobs. Create small buinesses. Make grants available for certain careers. Help struggling companies that are truly in danger and do not want to layoff their employees. Put more emphasis on export rather than import. Mr. President, go around the world and promote the dollar, so other nations will once again invest in them. Give incentives to large companies that hire employees.

Do this, and it will create jobs. The other mess is simply creating more illegals as well as making sure that ONLY they will have work. One hispanic Mayor has already been exposed. He claimed that he wanted to create jobs with the infrastructure dollars. When the female journalist read his porposal, it did reflect one professional job. I repeat; his proposal did not create ONE JOB for Americans! He had plans for a half of a billion dollars but not one job for true Americans.

Yes, the illegals had work, for the mayor made sure of that. He looked really stupid as he was being exposed. As bad as it seemed, he is not the only one.

Like the citizens in Juarez of Mexico, the citizens of the USA must take matters in their own hands and dictate to Washington. Unlike Bush, Obama will listen. Nevertheless, he is still a politician with his self interests. IT IS NEVER ABOUT YOU THE CITIZEN, NEVER!!

People will be hired to repair our crumbling infrastructure. Hello? Perhaps you didn't realize that a large percentage of our bridges, levees, railways, etc are desperate need of repair and upgrades.

Republican convention coming in Minneapolis. Is the bridge still out?

In more ways than one - the bridge to "somewhere - right now the (R) candidates are slaying each other - the infrastructure might pose some BIG questions with convention traffic and the collapsed bridge over the Mississippi -

check this out - the most literate city is Minneapolis

many old-time republicans there, but even more indies and dems -

So, - is the bridge still out?

The new bridge won't be finished until fall '08. We've got about a year to go.

It's a minor hassle to have to go around, but it's not impossible, and there's a light-rail system that works very nicely and plenty of buses. Traffic is always bad during rush-hour anyway; I don't think the bridge will make any appreciable difference in the congestion-- it's going to be congested anyway.

Incidentally, I can't think of anything much more hateful than saying you hope a few convention-goers will fall off the old bridge "if we're lucky." REALLY mature, do_u.
