Battery Makers Move to Michigan - WLAJ

The makers of batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles are getting some big incentives to move their companies here to Michigan.

Tuesday Governor Jennifer Granholm signed more legislation to encourage them to open factories here.

It means one thing, jobs- about 6,600 of them- and with the state unemployment rate hovering near 12 percent, thats good news for Michiganders.

"It's not a question that the electric vehicle is going to be built, the question is where?" said Governor Granholm.

The answer is Michigan.

The Michigan Economic Growth Authority unanimously approved battery cell manufacturing tax credits for four companies Tuesday including Johnson Controls, LG Chem, Dow Chemical and A123 Systems.

Martin Dober of the MEDC says the tax credits are what won the business.

"A lot of other states have been competing for these projects, and I can say pretty confidently that at least two of the projects announced today would have gone to other states if not for these incentives Michigan put together," Dober said.

Should Michigan & rest of upper midwest, try to move out of auto manufacturing & develop more hi-tech economy?

Michigan has great public research universities, as do some of our neighboring states. This type of infrastructure is what helps build hi-tech industry. Auto manufacturing in this part of America is dying and bailouts will only prolong the agony. We are simply no longer competetive in that industry. Let auto manufacturing migrate to the south where many Asian manufacturers are growing, and let us build a hi-tech, knowledge based industry here in Michigan and in surrounding states.

In order to develop different field of work in the state, it requires re-training of people in general. I feel that auto makers could use high-tech to engineer cars which run on alternative fuels rather than just gasoline. The people who work those factories eventually be re-trained and re-educated to more high-tech field of work.

Also, Michigan could set aside State owned properties to be developped for high-tech industries and offer tax incentives to good companies to move into the area.

I like your idea of making the change, but scrapping the auto manufacturing altogether would be a drastic measure without considering suffering by so many Americans. I believe in order to save the auto manufacturing industries in Michigan, it requires different mind set of management as well as Union than who we have currently. These new set of people should be encouraged for innovation in engineering instead of same old things year after year. I just cannot find it in my heart to see millions of kids go hungry for the sake of innovation/improvements.

We need to look at both the shifting and gradual re-training of the people in Michigan and introduction of new high-tech industries into the state. It will be a significant undertaking but with conserted effort by the state government and many people of Michigan, it can be done.
I see "hope" to hear from people like you who are thinking for the good of the state and its people.

Keep talking and get things started. You have my vote.

has anyone read about the GOP strategy change for michigan?

WELL NOW that THE GOP BANKRUPTED THE WHOLE COUNTRY and say forget the people(social) and the infrastructure.. there are more wars in our future.. so glad to see they are looking at the local economy... enough to get votes.

i'm glad OBAMA is looking at real permanent Change that's good for all. Because he has a JD degree in constitutional law and considers war a far last resort and is for all the people and more. Which one of the GOP can be held as equal to the Potential Good of Obama?

I'm glad you know how to think for yourself. I would hate to think you just cut and pasted this rant.

I think Obama needs to worry about the DNC before focusing on the GOP.

I like Obama, but I can't vote democrat. The reason is because I live in Michigan. see below.?

Michigan and Detroit is controlled by democrats. It used to be a proud manufacturing state. I realize the importance of unions in the past, but now they got greedy and they chase major employees out of the state despite Michigan's incredible infrastructure. Detroit is home to corruption, abandoned buildings, and poor democrat leadership. This is why I can't vote democrat.
Feedback please?
La Vie.... You and many others obviously care or else I wouldn't have been flooded with answers in less than one hour.

You can still vote for a democrat on a federal level.
