Distillery District gains Internet popularity as developer looks ... - Business Lexington

Lexington, KY - If voters on the Web site StimulusWatch.org had anything to say about it, the Lexington Distillery District would be the first in line among the myriad of national projects vying for government stimulus funding.

The Web site, created by independent developers to let citizens weigh in on proposed stimulus project proposals, allows page users to vote on whether or not each individual project is critical in nature. The site tallies the "yes" and "no" votes and allows them to offset each other, resulting in a cumulative positive or negative score, or "vote ratio." As of Monday, April 13, the site's vote ratio for the $15 million public improvements to Lexington's Distillery District was 1,140, the most favorable of all the stimulus projects listed, not only for Kentucky but nationwide.

Whether that stands as an objective grassroots validation of the project's worth or a testament to the rallying capabilities of Distillery District advocates, it does

Just how bad is our electrical generating and transmission infrastructure in the U.S.?

Storms have knocked out power in Kentucky and Arkansas, and the news is that it may be until mid-February before some have power back. Why should it take that long? As that indicative of infrastructure neglect?

You are correct in most of your assertions

New power plants, and especially coal or nuclear are next to impossible to get licenses for

If there is damage to a power generator or substation, there is hardly any backup systems to certain areas.

Some areas are "electricity rich", where if there is damage at the regional power generator they are networked with other power generators and can buy power from outside their region to supply the loss from the down regional power generator.

That's the case in Kentucky and Arkansas. The damage to their substations means they can't distribute the electricity they are making and they have just a few suppliers of electricity in their region so they have a bottleneck around those substations. Until they are all fixed, nothing can move through them

If there were more generating facilities interlinked with their distribution facilities networked with other generating facilities, they could just bypass the damaged facilities and get the power from outside their region until it was repaired.

What infrastructure projects would you like improved w/ the stimulus package?

Assuming the bill is revised and doesn't include as much for condoms as new roads, what projects would you like to see done in your state or city?

In Kentucky I'd like
* every interstate to have cable median barriers
* several Ohio River bridges in Louisville & near Cincinnati replaced with more modern (and prettier) bridges
* more rail trails

How about you?
