Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who is awaiting confirmation as the next secretary of Health and Human Services, has made it clear that she views the widespread use of health information technology as essential to reforming the health care system.

In 137 pages of written answers to questions from members of the Senate Finance Committee after an April 2 confirmation hearing, Sebelius repeatedly cited health IT as a way to lower costs, raise the quality of care and achieve comprehensive health care reform.

“A nationwide interoperable health IT infrastructure is a fundamental building block for broader health reform,” she wrote, adding that the federal government must step in to ensure that “systems are interoperable and that patient privacy is assured.”

In 10 instances, Sebelius also referenced transparency as a tonic for the health care industry’s ills.

Sebelius called for “transparency about health care quality through reporting requirements” and the use of “information technology that can alert doctors when patients have allergies or drug contraindications.”

So, what will McCain and Obama do to fix our infrastructure?

Kansas, the roads are falling apart in the rural areas. No rebuild after 50 yrs, some roads going into some rural towns are barely passable. And the people in the county do not have money to pay for the roads. Marion County Kansas has HALF of their bridges listed unsafe for school buses to travel over. Again, no money from the people available. Roads, bridges, public buildings, all in decay due to neglect from Washington. Yet we don't hear from McCain or Obama.

Neither has been at all specific. Frankly, with a deficit as large as we already had before the bail out, all we are working with is play money.

I just found out that a neighborhood near us (suburban Indianapolis) has never had paved roads. I asked my husband because I saw that some were being paved. That's pretty bad. I've lived on gravel and shell roads and nothing can stop the dust from seeping into your house.
