Storm damage estimates hit $100M - Bizjournals.com

“Based on reports from insurance companies and from what I’ve seen personally, the insured losses are easily that high,” Oxendine said in a news release. “Including damage to infrastructure and uninsured property, the actual loss is much higher.”

Storms caused damage in the metro Atlanta area and in Burke, Chattooga, Crisp, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Richmond, Stephens, and Sumter Counties.

Consumers with damaged property can take the following steps to begin the claims-filing process:

• Contact your insurance agent immediately if you have had damage to either your house or car; do not delay. Your agent should provide you with claims forms and arrange for an insurance adjuster to visit your property or look at your automobile.

• Secure your property. For example, if your roof was damaged or blown off, or a tree has punctured the roof, cover the affected area with a tarp or plywood to protect your property from further damage. Keep receipts of materials used for repairs; your insurance company will reimburse you for repair costs.

Facebook for Trees : Encouraging Green Infrastructure in Georgia

Do you and your family celebrate Arbor Day? My family doesn't. In fact, we usually cut down a random tree on this day. OK. I am just joking.
Seriously, I just googled when Arbor day is celebrated and learned that Arbor Day is actually celebrated  on different days depending on what state you live in. South Carolina is in December, while Georgia is celebrated in February. Go figure.
The playing field to empower, encourage, and educate the public about the importance of trees is ripe for innovation. I think the Georgia Urban Forest Council and Georgia Forestry Commission have just stepped up to the plate with their new social networking website: The Grove.

54 acres of forested land each day in the Atlanta area alone are lost due to land development. Their hope is to reach a broad audience of people who could then get informed and excited about Georgia's green legacy and spread the word. They may be on to something. No other state's forestry agency has a social networking program designed to encourage residents to plant trees.

Georgia residents are encouraged to plant a tree with family and friends, upload their photos of planted trees and post their stories to share the experience with other Grove members. An interactive Tree Match Tool provides guidance on choosing the right tree to commemorate a special event, as well as information on tree planting, tree care tips and the benefits of maintaining a healthy urban forest.

They have future plans to create bulletin boards, wikis and social networking applications for other sites such as Facebook to increase their visibility. Check out the site.

Why should US taxpayer money go towards rebuilding Georgia?

I read that the USA will help Georgia with humanitarian, infrastructure, and military.
The humanitarian part i understand, but why should a cent of my tax money go to rebuilding there country and on top of that there military?
Then again this is consistent with the US government. Ironically they can tell Russia to leave a country that attacked them, but have no problem occupying Iraq a country that never attacked us.

My opinion is that the USA should keep well out of the Russian-Georgian conflict. Europe has a history and many countries there have relations with each other that stretch back hundreds of years before the USA was even formed and even before the land was discovered. Russians and the region where Georgia is located have had poor relations since the middle ages. Let them deal with it themselves. Georgia rightly belongs to Russia and Russia has the power to take her...Again.

Why did Georgia pick Ossetia to bomb & get the time to kill 2000 in response to Russia attacking them?

If Russia were first attacking Georgia, Georgia couldn't get mobilized fast enough to both defend themselves from a Russian invasion and to fly to Ossetia's capitol to bomb out their infrastructure, hospitals and security forces.

get your facts straight...

"In the middle of July, the United States held joint military maneuvers with Georgia immediately outside of the Georgian capital. The South Ossetians waited until the U.S. military force (approx. 1500 Marines) left Georgia, at which time they started launching small attacks across their border against Georgian troops. It was designed to induce a reaction from the Georgian military, and that's exactly what happened."

What do you think about the idea that we'll upgrade our infrastructure to jump start the economy?

I live in Georgia and we had bad roads for years. Luckily, we kicked out the Dems and the state takes care of our infrastructure now. You should drive down here and see how good we have it..and we didn't need to burden the rest of the country with the cost. These libs are losing their minds!!

Actually Georgia has pretty good interstates. Illinois, Michigan and Ohio's really suck. But the states have have pissing away all the money they collect in gasoline taxes on other projects. Leaving this burden to the federal government is both irresponsible and wrong. People need to make their states more accountable and keep the feds as far away from our pockets as we can keep them.
