No drill, baby, drill off California - San Francisco Chronicle

Fortunately, within weeks of President Obama's inauguration, his new Interior secretary, Ken Salazar, put the plan on hold, calling it a "headlong rush of the worst kind" that was made with "almost no consultation from states, industry or community input." Salazar, to his credit, is in San Francisco Thursday for the last of four regional meetings to listen to our concerns.

As Californians, we should speak with one voice and tell the new administration, unequivocally, that oil and gas drilling off our coast would be an environmental and economic disaster.

This is not our first battle to protect our coast. In the 1970s, President Jimmy Carter's Interior secretary, Cecil Andrus, came to California after the oil embargo to explore the idea of new offshore oil and gas leases. In the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan's Interior secretary, James Watt, made a desperate push to build new oil rigs off our coast. Now the "drill, baby, drill" mantra could once again put California's coast in peril.

What is a service sector or infrastructure that California lacks?

...or needs serious improvement?

How can we improve it to be more environmentally friendly, equitable, and at a low cost to the city/county or state? Or perhaps the innovation could actually generate revenue for the city/county/ state.

This is for my Sustainability Planning class, so I'm trying to gather ideas of making small-scale cities more "eco-friendly", equitable and sustainable.

Any ideas?

Roads, rail and airports.

Why is the infrastructure so bad in most places in the USA for pedestrians and bicyclists ?

As a Scandinavian living in California . I am amazed how lousy and inconvinient everything is for bicyclists and pedestrians. Why is bike trails only something that is used for recreation, and why is it not part of the infrastructure for transportation ? And why are there so few running trails, nicely marked loops from 2.5 to 10 km and lighted at night. Where am I supposed to go run ? On some tread mill or at some high school track ( oh I cant do that either because the lock the gates to early )

Whenever I'm in Finland or Sweden I'm amazed as well. I'm out in the middle of nowhere, a few miles from the nearest town, and there are bike trails including underpasses at the occasional intersection all the way to the next town. I think it's great!

Of course, I also realize that I can drive from one end of the country to the other in one day. The size of the US is such that we will never have the kind of access to describe.

It isn't just the size of the country. It is also a matter of tax policy and social priorities. Americans (including myself) are not willing to pay the taxes (nor forego the liberites) required of a socialist system that might execute on such an infrastructure change.

Of course, given what does motivate us and how politics play out, the $4/gallon gas we will see next year and perhaps $5/gallon the following year may shift some priorities.

Will Environmentalists Apologize for California Fires?

Enviromentalists have fought brush clearing and other infrastructure improvements to California. Their myopic opposition to physical improvements to help people is responsible for much of the damage. Don't try to point the finger elsewhere, this calls for a major mea culpa!

You are 100% correct. The enviromentals have created the fuel that keeps the fires spreading. They do not allow controlled burns due to saving some creatures habitat which has created the fuel source between neighborhoods.
