"Soldiers can see how committed the Secretary of Defense is to seeing us train. I think it’s good that he gets an idea of this important training that we're receiving" says 1st Lt. Kevin Kannett, Fort Rucker Army Aviation.

Fort Rucker soldiers were at attention Tuesday when U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates made his first visit to the post. Army aviation students and instructors had a chance to show off their techniques during secretary gate's 2 and a half hour tour.

"They go underwater. They get flipped upside down, they were all wearing the goggles so that they couldn't see, and then they had to use the supplemental air in order to get their way out, that's like their worst case scenario" says Derek Joyner, Fort Rucker Army Aviation Instructor.

Gates has made a 500-million dollar recommendation that will help increase army helicopter accounts.

"Part of what I am trying to do in our budget for fiscal year 10 is recognize this kind of support for our war fighters and to see how we can increase it and also institutionalize it in the base budget of the dept. of defense" says U.S. Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates.
