Grays Harbor College offers 2-year forestry course - Seattle Times

ABERDEEN, Wash. —

When Grays Harbor College announced it was starting up a forestry program, instructor Todd Bates said he heard the same question everywhere: With the timber products industry closing down mills, why train people to work in that industry?

There's an easy explanation, according to Bates, a forester with 15 years of field experience in Idaho and southeast Washington.

"The trees don't know about the economy. The forests aren't going to stop growing," Bates said.

Plus, there are other reasons to keep open an outdoor, hands-on career path in an area where many people who have worked with their hands have had to seek new employment: "Not everyone wants to be a nurse," Bates said. The college nursing program has been a draw for many people who have lost jobs in the industry.

Bates, dressed in a Halloween costume as Meriwether Lewis to introduce his seven students to identifying plants (as Lewis did in the Corps of Discovery more than 200 years ago), says that even if big timber companies continue to pull out of the Harbor, their land is going to have to be managed. The economic downturn won't last forever, and Bates said there will likely be new regulations, either introduced by the government or just demanded by consumers, that forest products be grown and harvested in the greenest possible way. And in order to do that, foresters will be needed, Bates added.

What is the state of the horse industry in your area?

This year Idaho suffered through severe drought and wildfires. With the cost of hay skyrocketing, people are giving away horses, turning them loose in the wilderness, and starving them here in our area. I have watched herd dispersals of foundation QH go for sickeningly cheap prices and been on board with rescuing starving ones. Idaho is also one of the 5 states still left without more stringent abuse and neglect laws. My question is, what is it like in your area? It is a sad winter in the horse industry here...

Here in Missouri you can pick up Missouri fox trotter foals for under $500 (for $100 or even free if you will accept a sorrel). I am not talking junk horses here. I am talking registered horses with good conformation. I can even pick up two year olds for $500, and trail horses with hundreds of miles on them for $1000 to $1500.

In other words it stinks! Only the show horses sell for any real money and many of those are so hot to be almost worthless on the trail.

Edit

Roping horses are still selling for good money, because you can win money on the weekends with a fair roper.

What is the best way for me to get started in the wine industry?

I live in Northern Arizona which is unproven as a wine-growing region, land is expensive, water scarce and I would rather not relocate. Because of this and the fact that my location is a good distribution point for California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico, I favor marketing/distribution for getting started, but I'm keeping my options open and I would like to hear from anyone with good, solid ideas.

Gallo has an army of wine sales people in every state and they are always looking for someone. They will hire anyone they think is generally sharp, no need for wine experience, they'll give it to you.

You'll start out stocking shelves, checking stores for inventory, that sort of thing. If you're good, you'll move up to district manager, etc.

Good luck.
