Chicago, IL (AHN) - Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich pleaded not guilty as expected on Tuesday on 16 felony counts, including trying to sell the Senate seat of President Barack Obama. During the hearing the Democrat asked the judge if he could travel because he plans to join a NBC reality TV show set abroad.
Balgojevich's arraignment at the Dirksen Federal Building before U.S. District Judge James Zagel lasted only minutes. He left court surrounded by reporters, one of whom asked about his strategy, and he responded, "The truth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth."
The Illinois GOP issued a statement saying the "fiscal and ethical failures" of state Democrats continue despite the indictment of Blagojevich, a Democrat who had ended 25 years of Republican residence at the state Executive Mansion in 2002 after pledging to clean up the corruption that had plagued his predecessor.
"Each day Rod Blagojevich enters a courtroom is a stark reminder of six years of broken promises and the failure of Blagojevich Democrats to end the culture of corruption in Illinois," state Republican Party chairman Andy McKenna said.
