What is the job market like in the eastern part of Iowa?
Jul 24, 2007 by iboughtanightmare | Posted in Other - Careers & Employment
My husband and I are thinking of moving to Maquoketa, Iowa. I'm wondering what the job market is like within 20 miles of that area. How quickly can one find work? Both of us have several years experience in the restaurant industry, but are willing to do most anything.
I consider the Maquoketa area to be pretty much a dead end. Within 20 miles there is not much. While you may find affordable housing there, the commuting cost to a job in Dubuque, the Quad Cities or Clinton might eat up whatever you'd save in housing and may make living there impractical. Venture out beyond 20 miles and you have some pretty good employment possibilities. Dubuque is going great guns, has lots of employment opportunities and is about 30 miles. I don't know the economic situation in the Quad Cities but it's bound to be better than Maquoketa and it's about 35 miles. Clinton is also close but that small city strikes me as just plain bleak!
The real star in the area right now is Dubuque.
You say you are willing to do "almost anything". What are you qualified to do?
